STEM Challenge winner

Year 11 student Erin Rose - Morris has been selected as the Overall Winner for the Summer STEM Challenge that was launched by The Marches Centre of Manufacturing and Technology. Erin decided to enter the challenge after being inspired by one of the events which was run during July’s Careers Week and she impressed the team of judges Professor Gary Bosworth (Northumbria University), Vicky Ayton (University Centre Shrewsbury) and Leanne Mee (The STEM Workshop) with her design for a sustainable travel solution called The Overground. 

The judges were particularly impressed with how Erin had considered the overall impact of the new solution on climate change and how she carried out a life cycle assessment of the end product considering the raw materials, the manufacturing processes used and how the travel solution was going to run sustainable and be maintained. 

The Summer STEM Challenge was supported by a number of organisations both locally and nationally to promote the issue of sustainability and travel in particular. Erin has received a certification, a goodie bag, the opportunity to visit a day of F3 Cup racing in 2022 with the University of Wolverhampton Race Team and she will receive a tour of the University’s School of Engineering. 

UWR is the only student team to compete in this single seater racing competition and Erin will get to meet the team, receive a tour the paddock and watch the day of racing at a circuit of her choice, including Donnington Park, Brands Hatch and Oulton Park.  Erin has also been invited to attend the new training centre that is due to open in Telford by The Marches Centre of Manufacturing and InComm Training where she will receive a personalised tour and an opportunity of a taster day at our state of the art facility. 

Leanne Mee from the STEM workshop presented Erin with her prize in school and congratulated Erin on her creativity and commitment to sustainability. Well done, Erin!
